Just after midnight on January 4th, 2024, CCSO DS Eric Anthony Minix attempted to stop a stolen red Dodge Challenger near the 40 MM of Interstate 85 South in Coweta County.

Instead of stopping, the driver, Decedric ( De’ Cedric ) Vonche Donson, accelerated the vehicle initiating a deadly pursuit.

As the pursuit continued south on Interstate 85, units from the Grantville Police Department and several others would join the pursuit of the suspect.

The pursuit would eventually make it to the Georgia / Alabama line. The suspect would turn off the vehicle’s lights as it crossed the interstate bridge over the Chattahoochee River and into Alabama, it’s believed that units with the Lanette Police Department¹ Chambers County Sheriff’s Office deployed spike strips, which the suspect hit.

The suspect’s vehicle would come to a stop just inside Alabama.

DS Minix would exit his patrol vehicle and draw his weapon on the suspect awaiting more units.

Tragically, a responding officer with the Lanette Police Department struck DS Minix in the chaos. Despite the immediate rendering of aid, DS Minix passed away at the scene.

The Grantville Police Department Officer who had been behind the lead unit would wreck his vehicle off the interstate, though he was still able to help affect the arrest of the suspect and tend to the fallen officer. Luckily the GPD officer was treated and released from a local hospital with minor injuries.

The suspect was placed into custody by units from the Troup County Sheriff’s Office ( GA ), who had joined the pursuit just before it had crossed into Alabama.

¹ The article has been updated to show newly obtained information that the spike strips were deployed by members of the Chambers County ( AL ) Sheriff’s Office.

The Suspect

Decedric ( De’ Cedric ) Vonche Donson, 25, of Pensacola, FL was released into the custody of a local law enforcement agency and booked into the Chambers County, Alabama, jail on the following charges: Fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement officer and Receiving Stolen Vehicle. As of Jan 5th, 2024 Donson remains in custody at the Chambers County Jail without bond.

The exact timeline of Donson’s legal future is unknown, however, it is expected he will eventually make his way back to Coweta County to face charges for the initial pursuit.

We now know that Donson was actively on Supervised Release through the Federal Bureau of Prisons after his March 2022 release from Federal Prison.

Criminal History

State and Federal Incarcerations

Donson was incarcerated in the Escambia County Jail from March 18th, 2016 until February 15th, 2017 when he was transferred to State Prison where he would remain until his release on August 1st, 2017. In total, he was incarcerated for just over 16 months of his 18-month sentence.

Donson served from November 6th, 2020 to roughly March 1st, 2021 in the Escambia County Jail before being transferred to an unknown Federal Prison until his release on March 18th, 2022. In total, he was incarcerated for just over 16 months of his 22-month sentence. He is then to serve 2 years of Supervised Release ending on or about March 18th, 2024.

Federal Criminal History

On March 9th, 2020 Donson was arrested by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department on 5 separate charges. You can click here to read more specific information on that arrest below.

As part of that arrest, Donson was charged with Felon in Possession as a firearm was found in his possession. The local Prosecutor declined to prosecute any of the 5 charges, however, the arrest report mentions the serial number of the gun came back as stolen and was attached to an active ATF investigation.

The US Attorney took the case before a Grand Jury in 2020. The case was able to be tried Federally due to the fact the stolen gun and ammo had crossed state lines before coming into Donson’s possession.

On October 20th, 2020 a Federal Grand Jury returned an indictment on the following count.

1.

Felon in Possession of Firearm and Ammunition

Felony

On February 21st, 2021, as part of a plea agreement, Donson pleaded guilty to the single count.

Donson was sentenced to 21 months in Federal Prison ( credit for time served starting 11/06/2020 ) as well as 2 years of supervised release upon release from Prison.

He would serve just over 16 months before being released from Federal custody on March 18th, 2022. With this date of release his supervised release period should last until March 18th, 2024.

Court records show that Donson had at least 3 reported violations of his supervised release including testing positive for drugs, failing to notify his supervision officer that he was questioned regarding a fleeing and eluding incident in February 2023, and admitting to attempting to defraud a drug test by drinking a “tea” to dilute his urine in April 2023.

The Probation office handling Donson’s supervised release chose to modify the conditions of his release in these instances, adding substance abuse treatment and eventually mental health treatment to his requirements.

Georgia Criminal History

A search of the Department of Corrections in Georgia shows that Donson has not served any time in prison in the State of Georgia.

A further search of Georgia Counties in the Metro Atlanta and Columbus areas shows no arrests or cases for Donson.

Florida Criminal History

Donson has an extensive criminal history in Florida. A majority of which is in Escambia County, which is the County that Pensacola is in.

Things of note.

A few things to remember as you read the following criminal history information.

During the period covered below, Donson never held a valid driver’s license. His first entry in the below criminal history, when he was 14, resulted in a D6 ( The form in FL that courts use to suspend your license – or at his age, the ability to get one ) being issued. In nearly every case after that, he failed to pay the fines required in his sentencing… resulting in a new D6 being issued as a penalty.  It does however seem that on August 23rd, 2023 he paid a good amount trying to clear up his older cases. On December 28th, 2023 it seems that he came to an agreement with the court to a payment plan – he then paid $210 ( Roughly $32 per case of which $25 was part of the payment plan and $7 was a print fee for a D6 to be created for each case ) and in return was given the needed paperwork to get a license.  If he did so is unknown at this time.

As of December 28th, 2023, the last time information is available, Donson owes the Escambia Courts $3,482.50 across the 8 cases covered by his payment plan. He also still owes over $8,000 in restitution to victims.

While the state declined to prosecute, the Federal Government did not. Please see the information under Federal Criminal History, here.

“On 03/09/20, at the address of [REDACTED] (Moorings Apartments) in Escambia County, Florida, De’Cedric Vonche Donson did knowingly and intentionally commit the offense of (2 counts) possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, dealing in stolen property, obstruction (without violence), and driving with no valid driver’s license, as follows:

On 03/09/20, while on patrol in an unmarked Sheriff’s Office vehicle, myself and other deputies were patrolling the area of Old Spanish Trail Road and Olive Road, at which time I observed a silver Honda Accord being operating by a black male wearing a black jacket turn onto Old Spanish Trail Road from Olive Road. I observed the black male driver later identified as S/De’Cedric Donson to not wearing his seat belt. Deputy Ostrom #4IO was driving the Sheriff’s Office vehicle and made a u-turn and attempted to catch up to the silver Accord which had turned into the Moorings Apartments located at [REDACTED]. The vehicle then continued to drive through the parking lot and parked in a parking spot in front of the V Building. As myself and other deputies pulled up to the vehicle, I observed the same black male wearing the black jacket, S/Donson open the door and begin to exit the vehicle, I immediately opened the passenger door of the Sheriff’s Office vehicle and identified myself as Sheriff’s Deputy. S/Donson exited the vehicle and began walking towards the back of the vehicle. I ordered S/Donson to stop and provide me with his driver’s license due to the fact he was operating a vehicle while not wearing a seat belt. S/Donson stated he did not have his driver’s license and continued to walk away from me, at which time I grabbed his right arm and once again told him he was detained for a criminal investigation and that he was required to provide me with his driver’s license. S/Donson began to resist and pull away from me while shouting to bystanders nearby to come help him. Myself and other deputies after a short struggle were able to get S/Donson into handcuffs. I then escorted S/Donson to the back of Deputy Barnett #380 marked patrol vehicle and placed him inside. S/Donson still refused to provide his identification.

While speaking with S/Donson I was advised by Deputy Felan [I[ #351 that there was a firearm in plain view in the driver’s seat of the vehicle directly where S/Donson was sitting. Upon approaching the vehicle, I immediately smelled the odor of fresh marijuana emanating from inside. Based on plain smell, a probable cause search was conducted on the vehicle. Inside the vehicle on the driver’s seat I observed a Smith and Wesson Shield 9mm bearing serial number JCK9466. 19 photographs were taken of the interior of the vehicle and the location of the firearm before it was moved. Upon clearing the firearm, one 9mm round was in the chamber of the firearm, along with nine other 9mm rounds inside the magazine. No other contraband was located inside the vehicle.

A criminal history check was conducted via dispatch which showed a prior guilty conviction for robbery with a firearm on 0l/24/17, which confirmed S/Donson was a convicted felon. It was also determined that S/Donson did not have a valid driver’s license and had never had one issued to him. A records check of the Smith and Wesson Shield confirmed that the gun was stolen and was one of 25 firearms stolen from a local Federal Firearm’s licensee and was part of an ongoing investigation by ATF (reference case number F20200000257).

I then spoke with S/Donson, at which time he provided no legal means of obtaining the stolen firearm and stated that recently he has been receiving threats from individuals he knows and stated he needed protection.”
